Newton High School
Storm were looming just east of Newton as Derby pulled into town but moved to the north leaving the night cloudy and windy. Cloudy could be a good way to describe Derby’s first half play as well as the boys just appeared to be in a haze. Play just seemed a step off and was not the fluid movement the boys usually have on the field. That being said, Newton was never very dangerous in the first half while the Panther’s best chance kissed of the woodwork. That would also happen two more times in the second half, as well as a shot that the Newton keeper was able to push over the crossbar. The Panther’s second half was much smoother and they were more aggressive which was keeping Newton pinned deep. It would be a counter attack that would spring Newton free down the right for one of only three shots on goal. They would connect for the game’s only goal in the 41′. Derby would have almost all of the possession from that point on but just not be able to finish.
The loss gives Derby (9-2) only its second loss of the season and will host Salina Central on Thursday.
