Newton High School
The matchup with Newton is always an exciting one to watch as the game play is fast, the teams organized and the final scores are always close. Add to that playing the game in Newton and this becomes a tough road trip for the Panthers, but Derby has been the victor the past few seasons and was looking to build on last Thursday’s win. The Panthers looked good right from the opening whistle. Both teams had their looks at goal as both had five shots on frame in the first, but Derby looked a little more organized. The lone first half goal was on a poorly cleared ball that Grant Sacket slammed home on a volleyed shot to the back post in the 37′.
The second half was much like the first for both teams but Derby had better chances at goal and you could tell that the Derby forwards were starting to ware out the backs for Newton. In the 75′ another poorly cleared ball would end up in the net but this time for Newton to even the score. In overtime Derby was on the attack from the start getting a couple quick attacks. It would be Adrian Schrage getting free down the middle of the field for the one on one with the keeper that he would finish far post for the game winner.
Two wins in a row pushes Derby to 6-5 as they look to continue this momentum at home against Salina Central Thursday.
