Game Recap

Derby traveled to Manhattan tonight for a regional semifinal match. The teams had to fight dropping temperatures and a strong north wind in a rematch of the Titan Classic final earlier this season, also a 1-0 win for Manhattan. Both teams were very evenly matched and just like their previous match, neither team controlled the game. The only goal of the match was a put back off a short clearance from a corner kick in the 37’.
It’s a tough loss but a very well played game by the Panthers. Derby’s record improves from last year with a final record of 10-8.

Game Recap

Regional soccer. Derby hosting Lawrence Free State. Two very evenly matched teams that were looking to keep their season alive. The match was action packed from the beginning as Derby missed a shot just wide of the near post fifteen seconds into the night. The first goal was in the 5′ by Free State and answered in the 8′ by the Panthers. The goals in the second half were within just a few minutes of each other as well. When one team scored the other picked up the pace and always managed to equalize. It was a very entertaining match to watch as both teams played a very similar style of game. Both teams also had their fair share of controlling the game in their attacking third while also getting bogged down and having trouble getting out of the back. The fact that they went to overtime was not all that much of a surprise.
The scary moments came with just under one minute left in overtime. A Derby handball gave Free State the PK and chance they needed to finish the game. But AJ Howard came up big with the save and Kaleb Liu cleared the ball off the line keeping the Panthers in the match. In overtime number two Jayden Stanley would get run over by the Free State keeper giving Derby a PK opportunity. The Grant Sacket shot would find the back of the net for the golden goal giving the Panthers (10-7) the 3-2 win and a trip to Manhattan on Thursday.

Game Recap

A season finale match at Campus. If history repeats itself it will be a physical contest and a close game. Plus regional matchups could change with the outcome of the game. The Panthers came out with a lot of energy but Derby kept their calm and just played good soccer. The only goal in the game was an unfortunate own goal midway through the second half. Both teams had their chances in what was a very even contest.
Even with the loss Derby (9-7) finishes in the 8 seed and will host the opening round of regionals next week.

Game Recap

One more game this season played out against Campus in Haysville. You would think that the Panthers would be fired up for the last game but the team was very flat in the first half and in a very uncharacteristic manner gave up an early goal. That being said, Derby was never out of the game. When the second half started Derby had more energy and started moving the ball much better. They were also back to controlling the defensive side of the game and you could feel that it was just going to be a matter of time before they scored. The chance would come on an attack out of the back for Derby as Caleb Stewart carried the ball into the box and drew the foul. Mike Self took and finished the PK to even the game. Derby kept their foot on the gas but could not find another goal leaving the game to end in a tie.
Derby ends their season with a 13-2-1 record.

Game Recap

Senior night in Derby and seniors Grant Sacket, Adrian Schrage, Kaleb Liu, Wade Baker, Ethan Foster and Joel Craig wanted to go out with a win. But Maize was coming to town, the team that was upset by Derby on their senior night in a 1-0 game last year. Maize is always a very organized team but Derby’s style of controlling possession is a good matchup. That being said, Derby was not their usual selves despite being able to get in behind the Maize back line. The Panthers speed was the deciding factor in the first half and the lone goal was a direct result of that pace as Mike Self attacked the center back, won the ball and was able to chip the goalie. Hard to believe that an 18′ goal would be the game winner but neither team put up very many shots. Maize only recorded one shot on goal, though were very dangerous at times. On the other side Derby only put four shots on goal. The second half was the Derby fans are used to seeing, controlling over sixty percent of the possession and keeping their opponents from getting free.
With regionals looming on the horizon, Derby (9-6) will head to Campus on Thursday.
