Game Recap

The first round of regionals was played in Manhattan last night with Derby playing the three seed and coming in as the underdog. The Panthers were very relaxed as they took the field and did something Manhattan did not expect. They played solid soccer that frustrated their opponent multiple times. It was not always pretty but Derby played strong. Manhattan never appeared to be very dangerous on the attack and the Panthers defense was up for the challenge. While Derby was no more dangerous than Manhattan in the first half, they did have their fair share of the attack as the first half played out with pretty even possession between the two teams leading to a scoreless first half. Things would change very quickly in the second half. Derby was shocked immediately as Manhattan would manage three goals in the first five minutes of the second half. The Panthers seemed stunned but at no time did the players hang their heads and give up. They kept pushing offensively getting off several shots in the second and the defense strengthened as the second half played out. Derby would give up one more goal late in the half but still fought on, looking dangerous several times, just unable to score. While Derby’s season came to an end there were many positives to take home. This team was a young team that gained a lot of experience as the season went on, giving them a lot to build on for next season.
Thank you to the seniors who have helped forge the groundwork for future teams and to all the friends, family and fans who cheered the team on this year.

Game Recap

The season’s final game would be a match between the Panthers and Maize on Senior night at Derby Panther Stadium. Derby would start out well in this game keeping pace with Maize. Derby looked dangerous at times forcing the Maize goalie to make several saves, keeping the game close. Maize would manage a goal on a set piece midway through the first half but Derby stayed in the game. The Panthers would get a couple great chances as a result of handballs by Maize. Both would force great defensive plays by Maize but the half would end with Derby down 1-0. The second half got off to a great start by Maize scoring quickly followed up by another quick goal. Derby would stay dangerous regardless and come close to scoring. A rough fowl at midfield by Derby would draw a red card putting the Panthers down to ten men for the remainder of the game. This would be the catalyst Maize needed as they added four more goals to their total. Derby never gave up and continued to play tough but just did not have an answer for Maize. Derby drops their final regular season game 7-0 to Maize. Derby will head to Manhattan Tuesday for the first game of regional play.
