Manhattan High School
The first round of regionals was played in Manhattan last night with Derby playing the three seed and coming in as the underdog. The Panthers were very relaxed as they took the field and did something Manhattan did not expect. They played solid soccer that frustrated their opponent multiple times. It was not always pretty but Derby played strong. Manhattan never appeared to be very dangerous on the attack and the Panthers defense was up for the challenge. While Derby was no more dangerous than Manhattan in the first half, they did have their fair share of the attack as the first half played out with pretty even possession between the two teams leading to a scoreless first half. Things would change very quickly in the second half. Derby was shocked immediately as Manhattan would manage three goals in the first five minutes of the second half. The Panthers seemed stunned but at no time did the players hang their heads and give up. They kept pushing offensively getting off several shots in the second and the defense strengthened as the second half played out. Derby would give up one more goal late in the half but still fought on, looking dangerous several times, just unable to score. While Derby’s season came to an end there were many positives to take home. This team was a young team that gained a lot of experience as the season went on, giving them a lot to build on for next season.
Thank you to the seniors who have helped forge the groundwork for future teams and to all the friends, family and fans who cheered the team on this year.
