Senior night in Derby and seniors Grant Sacket, Adrian Schrage, Kaleb Liu, Wade Baker, Ethan Foster and Joel Craig wanted to go out with a win. But Maize was coming to town, the team that was upset by Derby on their senior night in a 1-0 game last year. Maize is always a very organized team but Derby’s style of controlling possession is a good matchup. That being said, Derby was not their usual selves despite being able to get in behind the Maize back line. The Panthers speed was the deciding factor in the first half and the lone goal was a direct result of that pace as Mike Self attacked the center back, won the ball and was able to chip the goalie. Hard to believe that an 18′ goal would be the game winner but neither team put up very many shots. Maize only recorded one shot on goal, though were very dangerous at times. On the other side Derby only put four shots on goal. The second half was the Derby fans are used to seeing, controlling over sixty percent of the possession and keeping their opponents from getting free.
With regionals looming on the horizon, Derby (9-6) will head to Campus on Thursday.
