A rematch of an overtime stunner in last year’s regionals played out tonight with Lawrence Free State coming to Panther Stadium. The match through the first half was completely even in every statistical category. It was a tough physical battle where both teams were very dangerous at times just not enough there to put one in the net.
The second half was just as tough for both teams to score. Free State drilled one over the net from six yards out and could not convert on a couple that bounced through the six. Derby missed connecting on a too hard hit cross with an open net and a couple hit right at the keeper. The break came in the 77’ when Clayton Simmons smashed a shot of the right upright but Malik Bryant was there to put home the rebound. But the celebration was short lived when a quickly taken free kick was saved by A.J. Howard but spilled back to the waiting foot of a Free State player as Derby was not ready to clear just a minute later.
In the playoffs with the tie at the end of regulation you go to a golden goal situtaion with two ten minute periods followed by two five minute periods then to penalty kicks if needed.
And tonight they would be needed as both teams missed just wide on a few shots in the overtime periods. The first five takers for each team were able to bury their shots so off to sudden death in penalty kicks. The sixth shot for Free State was hit wide left leaving Derby’s Brady Hestand with a chance to end the game. He finished off the shot sending Derby to the regional finals.
The Regional Finals will be played Thursday when Derby (13-4) travels to LIberal.
