In order to secure a league championship and a four seed in the regional seatings, Derby had to bring home a win from Salina Central. A tough proposition when it’s your third game in four days. The Panthers showed up quick though with a little flick from Saul Muñoz to Mike Self for the 8’ strike. But that seemed to be all the energy they had as the team went flat. The stat sheet will not show that lack of energy with Derby completing 340 passes in the match, over one hundred more than Central.
Things were better for Derby in the second half and Derby was able to use a vast majority of the bench without losing any continuity. The team was more creative in the second as well, though the goals did not come. The second goal would come in the 78’ again from Mike Self, sealing the victory and their first league championship since 2013.
Derby (12-2-2, 5-0-1) will host a regional match on Tuesday at Panther Stadium.
