The weather may have been incredibly cold, but the Panthers were anything but that to begin the match, coming out very aggressive and Saul Muñoz netting the first of his two in the 10’, he would add his second in the 37’. The Panthers used their speed to exploit the wings through the first half with much success, getting crosses in from deep in the corners, it also allowed Derby to keep pressure high and force the defense for Topeka to do most of the work in that half. The middle of the three first half goals was on a hustle play from Antonio Barbosa who worked his way into the box to clean up a loose ball in the 24’.
Where the Panthers had trouble this evening was in the middle, an unusual turn of events for a middle that is usually very strong. That was very prevalent in the second half with Derby finding themselves under quite a bit of pressure for the better part of the second half. The Panthers offense would settle in a little as the second played on but it was once again the defense putting up a clean sheet that made that 3-0 halftime lead all they would need.
With the victory, Derby (13-2-2, 5-0-1) will host the regional championship against Wichita Heights on Thursday.
