Derby High School vs Liberal High School

The four hour drive to and from Liberal does not seem as bad if you can find a way to pull of the upset. Can you make that long trip and still perform becomes a major question. The first ten minutes of the game set the tone and the team came ready to play. Physical play from both teams also contributed to the game being very even in its play. Liberal was a little more dangerous going forward, rattling off a couple more shots including hitting the post. Derby got off a couple but it was their defense that was the factor in the first half.
To start the second half, Liberal started fast and pinned Derby back immediately. The Panthers did not falter in the back though and were able to fight off the pressure. Derby was able to counter continuously when fending off the pressure and were starting to find success. After a Liberal shot, A.J. Howard took a quick throw out over the high press of Liberal to GoGo Vielmas, who carried the ball into space and found Saul Munoz who did the rest. He finished the shot in the 54’ in what would be the winning goal. Liberal would not stop fighting but Derby would not falter. They held off Liberal to bring home their first regional championship in five years.
Derby (14-4) will head to Topeka to face Washburn Rural on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
