Take temperatures in the mid 40′ and mix that with 20 mph winds and you get spring in Kansas. Rough weather for a soccer game but that is what Derby faced at Eisenhower this evening. Derby had the wind at their back to start but even that can be trouble until you figure it out. Once they got going the team was able to possess and move the ball. Eisenhower would occasionally counter but Derby would reset and push. In the 27′ Brianna Moore was able to open the scoring and the Panthers looked like they had it figured out. But not even ten minutes later a ball that Derby could not clear found a home in the back of the net to even the score.
Knotted at one and now facing the slowly calming winds, Derby went back to work. As they tried to find that go ahead goal Eisenhower would find a way to use the wind and counter. An early blast would hit the cross bar for Eisenhower but the Panthers cleared the rebound to keep the score tied.
Overtime one was a tough battle, one that neither team was able to control. So on to the second extra frame. Both teams pushing to find that golden goal but try as they might, it just would not happen. As the overtime drew to a close Brianna Moore found the ball at her feet. A hard cut at the top of the penalty box and a move between two defenders was finished with a shot into the top shelf and with just 1:20 left on the clock gave Derby the win.
Tonight’s contest broke a two game skid and the Panthers will travel to Arkansas City on Thursday.
