It only took about a minute this evening for the Panthers to get into the box and get off a one on one shot from Manuel Valenzuela, who would get an assist late in the first half. The shot was saved by the charging keeper, but you knew Derby was ready to play. In the end the Panthers controlled every aspect of this game. A 10’ goal from Alex Hernandez-Luna that was played in by Adrian Vielmas opened the Derby score sheet for the season. While Northwest did find chances to counter and catch Derby out of shape in the back they were never very dangerous, allowing Derby to keep their foot on the gas. The Panthers would add a goal at the end of the first half and carry a 2-1 lead to the break.
The Panthers appeared to clean some things up in the back as the second half started, helping the Derby offense stay aggressive. Hernandez-Luna would get his second of the game in the 41’ but Northwest would not go away. They caught the Panthers out of sorts in the back and were able to sneak a player through and beat the goalie to close the gap. It was a little too late for Northwest though as Derby turned the pressure right back on and continued the attack to the final whistle.
The Panthers open their season with the victory and will have the Next two weeks off from play as they do not take the field again until September 13 when they go to the Northwest Tournament.
