Tonight’s match was a special one for the boys as they hosted the annual benefit game. This year’s event raised money for Special Olympics and even the visitors from Newton helped contribute this year. Newton brought a young team this year but they were ready to play. The rhythm for Derby seemed a little off tonight too which aided Newton and what they wanted to accomplish. The first half was controlled almost entirely by Derby even though Newton was the first to get on the board in the 36′. This sparked Derby as they were once again having to come from behind. DJ Pham would smash a ball that Newton had trouble clearing and find the net to even the score in the 38′.
The Panthers brought a little more energy and enthusiasm into the second half and found it a little easier to maneuver through the middle. This would allow Derby to slip their forwards in behind and let speed do the work. Mike Self would have a great run at goal and smash one off the left upright. Derby would hit the right upright and the crossbar in the second half as well. It was Saul Munoz on a breakaway that while unable to get to the ball, was able to put his body in front of the clear out from the Newton keeper and deflect the ball into goal for the 2-1 lead in the 50′. He would add another with under two minutes left in the match to seal the victory for the Panthers.
Derby (12-2, 5-0) will have the remainder of the week off. They finish off the regular season next week with a match at Eisenhower on Tuesday before coming home for Senior Night against Salina Central Thursday.
