Intense. Thrilling. Action Packed. No, not the newest action flick. The quarterfinal between Derby and Washburn Rural. Derby took the opening kick and went right at Washburn, missing just wide of the left post less than twenty seconds into the game. When all was said and done, the Panthers had three near misses in the first half. Washburn definitely had their chances as well. A.J. Howard came up with a few big saves and Omar Vielmas cleared a header off the back post. Ethan Hill would be the one to come up big as he smashed a shot off the bottom of the crossbar in the 38’ to bury what would be the game winner.
The second half the Derby defense came up big as the team was patient and consistent, able to fend off attack after attack by Washburn. The Panthers were smart with the attack, waiting to counter after winning the ball and making Washburn have to chase the game.
Derby (15-4) is now going to the final four for the first time in five years and will play Friday night in Olathe.
